Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Bago Region, about 70 miles north of Yangon. Only two and a half hour drive from Yangon makes it easily accessible for nature lovers. At first, it was made as a reservoir for irrigation to farmland, though it later transformed naturally into wetland which is 40 square miles. Enjoying wildlife with a touch for nature, numerous sightseers visit the Sanctuary all the year round. It is more than a century old wetland as it was established in 1873.
According to Myanmar Bird and Nature Society, Myanmar is ranked as one of the most diverse bird fauna residences in the world. Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to 125 out of 1,000 bird species found in Myanmar as a whole. It is worth a visit because it is one of 55 IBAs(Important Bird Area) around Myanmar. This is the reason why the international bird-watchers have chosen this sanctuary for watching the various species of forest migratory birds. The wetland is also an ideal spot for fun-seekers, botanists and naturalists. In addition to watching hundreds of migratory and resident water birds, wetland environment could be learnt by boat. During a boat tour, you can feel the nature while observing the vast numbers of various birds through passing around marshy reed beds for about 2 hours. A bird-watching tower will grant a fantastic view of the lake.

Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary was ranked as the Ramsar Site for its outstanding bird fauna in 2005. The sanctuary is, without a doubt, a preferable place for eco-tourists and bird lovers.
